Flying high with poppers – but please not on the plane!

We are regularly asked by our customers whether poppers can be taken on an airplane. After all, you don’t want to give up your favorite habits on vacation or on a business trip. Unfortunately, the answer is a clear no. You are not allowed to take poppers with you in your hand luggage or in your checked baggage. The reason for this is as follows: poppers consist of nitrites. Nitrites are highly flammable liquids and are classified as dangerous goods by the airlines. The airlines do not explicitly ban poppers, but generally all flammable liquids, including poppers. We asked Swiss International Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates and Singapore Airlines. All airlines refer in unison to their websites, where the prohibited items and dangerous goods are listed. One airline explicitly tells us that all airlines must comply with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

However, we know some people who regularly carry poppers in their checked baggage in the knowledge that this is not permitted. We confronted airport security at a large airport with this. The answer: all liquid products carried in hand luggage must be stowed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 liter and presented at the security checkpoint. If the bag contains critical substances or substances prohibited on board, such as flammable liquids or nail polish remover with acetone or paints and varnishes, these will be confiscated and destroyed during the security check.

In addition to the question of transport regulations, you must also ask yourself whether poppers are legal in the country you are traveling to and whether you are allowed to import the poppers you are carrying when you enter the country. We are aware of problems with poppers entering Singapore, Japan, Canada and Denmark. We have written a separate blog article for you as a guide on the legality of poppers in individual countries. You are welcome to contact us if you have any questions about the legality of poppers in your travel destination.
